Commitment
“The human mind is a miracle, and you will never see it spring more beautifully into action that when it is fighting against evidence that it needs to change” – Jason Pargin.
After the exictment wears off and the initial burst of energy dies down, what keeps the human mind going?
Discipline. Commitment. Perseverance.
Easy to ramble off, hard to implement, or is it?
One of my favorite stories on commitment is Terry Crews’ story on gym time. When his mind backs up on going to the gym, he finds a rather clever workaround. Simple commitments. First, the gym clothes come on. He puts it on without any intention to leave the house. After a while he drives to the gym, because his exercise gear is on anyway. Sitting in the parking lot, fully dressed can feel rather stupid. His mind has no choice but to prompt him to enter the gym. He gets up and enter, et cetera.
The idea is lovely. Simple “casual” steps.
Matthew Encina, one of my favorite content creators, would say; Cut your goals in half. Seems counter intuitive, but guess what’s worse? Inaction.
For me and for you; Start now.
Never stop.
